When it comes to smoking, there are some disturbing facts that people may or may not be aware of. These facts about smoking are something that need to be addressed if we are to continue our goal of becoming a healthier nation. And with the emergence of a new product called the electronic cigarette (ecigs for short) perhaps there can be a turnaround in some of these depressing facts.

Smoking Fact: According to the American Heart Association website, diseases related to smoking are the cause of over 440,000 deaths in the U.S.A. every year. When it comes to facts about smoking cigarettes, this could be the most disturbing.

And what could be even more disturbing than that is the fact that no one seems to have an answer as to how to cut down on these deaths. Easy smoking solutions are just not easy to come by.

Smokers are creatures of habit. Many smoke because they say they enjoy it, but many also admit they smoke because of both their physical nicotine addiction as well as their psychological addiction to going through the motions of smoking.

Electronic cigarettes address both of these issues for people who have chosen to start ‘vaping’ instead of smoking. And while electronic cigarettes have been frowned upon by the FDA and some other sources, to date there have been no reported deaths that were related to people smoking them.

Smoking Fact:According to the National Cancer Institute, tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemicals, 250 of which are known to be harmful, and of that 250, over 50 have been found to cause cancer.

It’s hard to imagine that that many chemicals could be present in one cigarette, but according to the experts, they are. With all the chemicals involved in the making of cigarettes, it’s not hard to imagine why so many people have gotten sick and even died from their smoking habit. It only makes sense that when someone’s body is being exposed to this many chemicals, something bad is almost certain to occur eventually.

Even though more studies perhaps need to be done on Electronic smokeless cigarettes, Professor Carl Philips of the Institute at the University of Alberta, Canada, when asked in an interview with, “What health benefits, if any, might smokers find if they smoked electronic cigarettes, or changed to electronic cigarettes?” had this to say:

“The health benefits of switching are almost exactly the same as the health benefits of quitting, and this applies to electronic cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and pharmaceutical nicotine. If a smoker can manage to switch from smoking to one of those other products, the benefits are approximately the same as quitting – they lower their cancer risk, they lower their cardiovascular disease risk, they get rid of acute symptoms of lung and airway problems, a risk that comes from smoking for pulmonary diseases and so forth. Switching is so close, as good as quitting, that from a health point of view there is no point in worrying about the difference.”

Smoking Fact: Second hand smoke causes over 3000 deaths annually in non-smokers. It also causes coughing, reduced lung function, and phlegm in those who are exposed to cigarette smoking on a regular basis.

These facts on smoking and second hand smoke have to make you wonder if the chemicals that are present in cigarettes have gotten stronger through the years. While second hand smoke may not have been thought about very much when the first cigarette was being smoked all those years ago, it seems that the effects of second hand smoke have gotten worse over time.

There are quite a few quit smoking methods out there, but none are as easy or stress-free as the electric cigarette. The fact that electronic cigarettes produce a harmless vapor instead of smoke is one of several excellent reasons to consider it as a smoking alternative to tobacco as you’ll learn as you pick up more facts about smoking cigarettes.
